National Gumbo Day

October 12th is National Gumbo Day, yet another day to celebrate food, this time some Louisiana born soup cuisine. Gumbo is a stew or soup, which was born in Louisiana. Gumbo basics are stock, meat or shellfish, a thickener, and vegetables. Gumbo is thickened by one of three different methods – okra, file powder, or roux. If you love gumbo, check out the restaurants in your area online at the Eat24Hours website and order some gumbo for delivery. Gumbo is perfect for any occasion and any weather, although personally I love some spicy gumbo in the winter to warm my bones.

One would consider gumbo to be an American cuisine since it originated in Louisiana in the 18th century, and in all rights, it is, but it is a fusion of several cuisine styles – French, Spanish, German, West African, and Choctaw. What does this mean to an Eat24Hours user? It means although gumbo is commonly found on American cuisine based restaurants, especially in the south, you can also find it in a variety of other restaurant cuisines.

Gumbo comes in two main varieties – Creole or Cajun. Creole relates to the gumbo originating out of New Orleans and southeastern Louisiana. The Cajun variety is found more in the southwestern region of Louisiana. Creole gumbo most often consists of seafood, tomatoes, and a thickener and is not as spicy as the Cajun gumbo. The dark roux of Cajun gumbo is one identifier as well as its spicy kick with seafood being the most popular of the Cajun gumbos. Click on over to the Eat24Hours website and help celebrate National Gumbo Day through ordering gumbo online for delivery.
